Traveling home to America....

The 14 days here in Kenya have quickly passed. Full and rich...ministry, laughs, new friends and experiencing Kenya in a real way. Now as we begin the journey home, we will take time to reflect and thank God for everything He has done here for and with us. The prayers of sooo many were felt in a deep way. Thank you for being a vital part of us with your love, prayers and encouragement. Thank you for following along on this blog. I pray you were able to catch a small glimpse of what we experienced. We are all truly blessed in America. My heart is forever changed in new ways ~ I pray He keeps it close to my heart everyday and I continue to grow in ways never imagined. Thank you..dear Sabina for your love and amazing care to us while we stayed with you. You are a true servant for Him. I pray..for great blessings, deep love and high favor over you my dada. To my precious team mates, Julie and Luz....you are incredible friends !  I love you so much ~
As we shared, laughed over and over, cried, cooked and ministered together....I will always cherish these days. God handpicked us to serve one another and to reach out to serve those who needed love and Him. (I never saw women who would fight over serving each other...ha ! )

Glory to Your Name, O God ! "
I will praise you, my God and King....I will praise you forever. Great is the Lord ! He is most worthy of praise ! His greatness is beyond discovery ! Let each generation tell it`s children of your mighty acts. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles....The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to to get angry, full of unfailing love....The Lord helps the fallen and lifts up those bent beneath their loads. All eyes look to you for help ; you give them their food as they need it. When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing....The Lord is close to all.......to all who call on Him sincerely. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cries for help and rescues them. The Lord protects all those who love Him. I will praise the Lord, and everyone on earth will bless His holy name forever and forever.

Day 14...last day

Tuesday...our last day in Kenya. Many emotions as we start the day knowing we are leaving our precious friends but anxious to return to our loving families who have greatly missed us. Bittersweet for sure.

As a special treat to celebrate our time together, what do girls like to do ??  Go for some pampering..indeed !  We headed to downtown Nairobi for some mani-pedi treatments. Sabina knew exactly where to take us. The shop was called "Tops Top."  A side for the med to get hair cut, shaved or trimmed along with a shave. The girl`s side was buzzing with ladies. It was fun to see them braid, add extensions and do African hair. It would have been a hoot to see them style our hair...but we were not that brave !!!  All 4 of us had a special lady or two attending to our nails. The girl I had was sweet and happy to serve me. She began work at 6 and labored all day until 7 p.m. Then had to ride a long 3 hours home !  Think about that daily schedule, only to begin all over the next early morning. We complain about our commutes but do we have 3 long hour ones ?

I soaked my feet in a basin of water. Cold water was first and they added hot steaming water from a tall thermos to mix. Yes...it was plenty hot !  In fact, my team mate, Luz looked over at me at one point and mentioned all that was needed was the seasonings as our feet were "cooking."   When my feet were worked on for each step, one foot at a time was laid upon her lap. Amazing massage was given !  I selected a fun color and she painted each nail carefully. When finished, she took my sandals and went to clean them also. This incredible service cost me a mere $5.00 !!!!  The girls that got both a manicure and pedicure only paid $10.00. When we told them what we pay in America they quickly converted the cost to shillings and could not believe the cost !   Facials, full body massages were very inexpensive also. I am sure those treatments would be incredible too. We assured the girls there we would surely return on the next trip back !

Lunch was next and we had worked up an appetite. We returned for the last time to one of our places that became a favorite for sure... Artcaffe.  A special time of fellowship with a young friend and her dear baby made our time complete while eating a delicious lunch. A grilled chicken sandwich with rocket leaves, roasted peppers and fresh parmesan cheese. Sooooo good !  Of course, coffee had to finish off the meal for me. Artcaffe roasts their own coffee beans so a bag HAD to go home with me.

While in the "organized chaos" traffic as I chose to call it everyday, vendors would walk 3 lanes of traffic selling their wares. On this last day I was determined to try and buy this way. Hmmm...don`t need bananas, maps or sunglasses. Puppies were enticing to Julie but I told her to "be strong."...Ha !  The little white one was fluffy and would have been easy to take right in our car window to take home to Sabina. However, her dog, Tommy might not have enjoyed a new playmate. Okay...keep looking ~  The white and red roses definitely called my name. Beautiful in every way !  For a mere $3.00 I bought a bouquet of 16 red lovely roses to give my dear Dada (sister) Sabina as a treat on this our last day. As my confidence grew in buying from the car window, I was on a roll !  Next came the skirts. What a pretty one to take home with me. How much ??  $4.00 ?!?!  Sold !   Wow..no need to stop at the store on the way home as you can get what you need right in traffic...ha !  This is a fun memory for me.

Sabina has a gift shop where we also shopped plenty. Found all sorts of jewelry, purses, scarves and even a cross for my "cross wall" at home. Happy to be able to support her business and bring back home treasures full of special memories.

Got back to Sabina`s house in order to pack our suitcases and have a quick bite to eat before leaving for the airport. We each had an extra suitcase to fill with items, due to taking over ministry gifts for the many places we visited. It did not take long to refill those with our gifts we had gotten. The 3 of us had so much luggage it did not all fit in Sabina`s car to head to the airport. When we had arrived it was only Julie and I. Luz had left before us with a stop in Uganda to visit family before joining us in Nairobi. Now as we tried to squeeze it all in..not working !  We needed to tie down the trunk but no rope. Sabina grabbed an outlet extension with a long cord and cut it with a knife. Hooray !  One of the gate guards tied it securely. We had to also place one of the smaller suitcases in the back seat with us. Sabina`s son, Kennedy drove so we had 5 of us in the small car and loads of luggage. We were stopped at the airport by security to take a quick search of the car. Kennedy got back in the car laughing as the guard told him we were plenty overloaded. I would imagine he was wondering just how many people were leaving with ALL  that was in that car !   Dropping us off at the curb had to be quick. It was emotional to say good-bye but such a rich feeling of love between all of us shared, knowing we would return again to our friends. Now...on to the very long flights ahead of us but our loving families waiting for us on the other end !

"I will give thanks to your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness, because your promises are backed by all the honor of your name. "  Psalm 138:2

Day 13....

Monday morning showed up early. Especially after a short night of rest. Luz is always happy to sit up with me while I write on the blog. I have made her my personal assistant for this task. It is usually late when I am writing  and I was sooooo very close to the end when .....swoooooosh....the entire blog entry disappeared !!  The late night then turned into lots of sharing and before we knew it, the time was after 2 a.m. All your amazing prayers have kept me fully energized.

We were looking forward to a time of fellowship with 2 precious friends we met and ministered with while here. Lunch at the Java House...and you know what that means...coffee !!  Wahhhhhhooooo!  What a yummy meal and a time of sharing with 5 others who dearly love God and are all about serving. We joined hands together while in the warm sun, thanking God for the awesome things He is doing in each of our lives. It is exciting to see what God has in store !

The rest of the afternoon we shopped for some last items to take home with us. So many laughs and a few tears as we know our time is soon to end for this trip. A good day .....thankful ~ Off for my last sleep night here. Tomorrow night we begin the very long journey back home to our families who are awaiting our return with great anticipation. My heart is full ~

Good night from Kenya,

Sunday...day 12

Hard to believe we are at day 12 and will be heading back home soon. This morning we attended a different church than we did last Sunday. This church is called Jubilee. Several thousand attend. Praise and worship had already begun when we walked in. The mass sound of singing was amazing !  I do believe we were the only white faces in this sea of black people. We looked like beaming flashlights !  The worship pastor and team led the body into His presence as we sang and worshiped. Clapping and dancing with great joy was evident and powerful. The praise team was dressed in bright green shirts with black pants for the men and a skirt or slacks for the women. The Bishop`s wife spoke on unity.  She spoke with a mighty anointing. She also had a great sense of humor I enjoyed. Special music was a lady from the Congo. At the close of the service, an altar call was given and 5 people came forward. We ended by joining hands and praying for one another for some time. The sound was deafening as the people called out loudly to Him. No fear in opening their mouths and calling out His name !  After the service, tea was served in the huge lobby. Imagine the vast amount of preparation for several thousand people. Popcorn was served to the kids. What a rich morning ~

Lunch was downtown at the ArtCaffe. Very trendy and seems American. We had a delicious lunch and a vanilla latte topped off the meal. Returned back for some rest and relaxation.....ahhhhh ~

Praying your Sunday was blessed ~

Day 11....

Saturday ~
This morning we left the hotel and began our travel back to the city. It was a 4 hour drive but we had a ladies meeting scheduled at a small church in a village called Kabaa. The country side was simply beautiful. Fields of tea and coffee !  I had a small taste of heaven for sure ~ I just loved the sight of these lush green fields with women working with large woven baskets on their backs. Steep mountain slopes all green with growing plants.
White people just don`t come through this place. We actually were the first white missionaries ever to come to this town !  It was an honor to come and serve. The pastor told us they would be talking about this for a year.

The meeting was to begin at 11....but African time is much different and due to us arriving late...we started a few minutes past 1. As we began to get out of the van, the sound of women singing filled the air. What a joyful sound!  The pastor greeted us outside and was so full of the HS. He was a refreshing spirit. Since we had such a long drive, we had to use the washroom. Welllllll...here we are on the side of a steep slope with the outhouse waiting for us !   We were brave ~ When it was my turn and I went in the door..let`s just say I swallowed hard..hehehehe. There was a small hole in the floor and the rest is history.  The view from the door was wonderful..that is the positive ~

We had an incredible time of praise and worship. The ladies sang loudly to the music of 2 drums covered in animal skin. I didn`t want it to end. Julie spoke a short encouraging message and when we had prayer at the end, I believe everyone came up front. The HS showed up in a mighty way ! The people were not afraid to loudly call out to God. What a refreshing time together ~  As we prayed for these precious people God`s spirit swept through. This time went on for awhile as we all knelt down and continued calling out to Him. They are in no rush and desire all they can get from God. The floor was covered with saw dust on top of the dirt and felt soft. More singing....joy..joy..joy ~  The pastor shared with us they are saving in order to buy this plot of land they are renting. The cost is $5,000.00 American dollars. They have 1,000. thus far. The goal is by December 11. 2011. It touched us in a big way and we desire to help partner with them in any way we can. We were served soda and "white bread" which was actually a cookie but not sweet.

The church building was made up of metal. Wooden benches and plastic chairs for us. Up front was a small platform with a generator running for the sound system. Lovely blue printed material hung as decoration on the sides of the platform on the walls. No ceiling...just rafters and we could feel the heat from the metal roof.  Windows had white sheer coverings that blew in the breeze.Dirt floor covered in saw dust due to the mud that is easily brought in from being on the side of a slope.

Sabina translated whenever we spoke up front. We gave our African names and they loved that !
The pastor`s one daughter has the same nickname that comes from my name...chico.

Here are a few things I noticed during our travel time today ....
....men fishing in the river with spears
....the words "to rent"...in Kenya it is "to let "
....cars passing each other and coming straight for YOU
....stopped along the road to buy produce at a local market. People literally ran to our van and held up their bunches of bananas, tomatoes, avocados, etc. All at the same time. A bit overwhelming. Our produce cost only 1.00 for each. Big bags and excellent quality.
....Del Monte pineapple fields...miles and miles
....Women gathered together at a local water hole washing clothes and laying them out on the dirt to dry
.....A shop with the sign "Late Night Chemist"

Arrived back to Sabina`s ready to crash for the evening. Dinner was tuna sandwiches and fruit. The sound of rain falling  is making us sleepy so I will close until tomorrow. Excited to attend a different church from last Sunday. Looking forward to the Holy Spirit falling again. Enjoy your Sunday too ~

Love,

Friday...Day 10

It is 11 p.m. in Africa. As I write this message I am cozy inside my mosquito net. This is our last night in the hotel as our driver will be taking us back to Nairobi tomorrow.  I am thankful for a bed but have to share a few humorous things regarding the hotel that I think you might enjoy. You will be thankful for all that you have. No
bathroom light. They have lights but the one in our room doesn`t work. Hmmmm....taking a shower has a whole new meaning at night.
No toilet seat...which is common. The faucet can do a 360 degree swivel but it still gives us water !  We have a small tv but no remote. You have to stand on the chair in order to reach it as it is up high. No hot water the first night but good news tonight...HOT water !  No shower enclosure. Just the shower head, 1 faucet...not a hot and cold. Amazing how well one can function with what is provided. We are all spoiled for sure !

This morning we headed out early for our safari. I was very excited ! As we entered the wilderness area the air was chilly. We are in the foothills of the mts. and can see the snow on top of Mt. Kenya. Our entire day was spent in the open top truck in order to view the animals at any given time. There was lots of African trees and brush for the animals to hide in and to rest in the shade. The grasslands were wide open and flat. You could see as far as the eye could see. The wart hogs greeted us first. Of course, we all thought of  the movie with the famous wart hog..They are funny to watch. We enjoyed the mothers with the small babies. They run like lightning !  Plenty of impala and gazelles....so pretty. A guide took us down to the river to find the hippos. We walked on a narrow path through the bush. quite the adventure as we stepped over the elephant dung. At one point the guide tells us..."this one was just left this morning ! "  Fun to know we are on the same path those big creatures decided to take earlier. Sabina asked the guide if he had a gun ??  He replies..." why do I need that ? "

My favorite animals were the family of elephants that crossed the road in front of the truck. They were sooo close. At one point the driver had to back up the vehicle. It is amazing how powerful they are when eating and pulling the grass and plants up from the ground. The baby was cute as it tagged along with the others. The other favorite was the giraffe. He could be spotted from a far distance and was happy munching away on the tops of trees.

Zebras, rhinos, baboons were just a few of the others we enjoyed. The lion was hiding from us as we hoped to see one. They were spotted in an area and we drove to that part later but could not see any. Our day was full of beauty for sure. We thanked God for allowing us to see so many animals in a short time.

The Equator crosses  over in this wilderness so I got to stand on the equator today !  How crazy is that ?

Always lots of sights to behold along our travel. Saw a white dead goat thrown over the back of a bike while 2 men chatted. Children walking home from school and always stare at our white faces. One little boy was in a group and as they all were looking, I waved to them. He threw me a kiss and I responded right back with one for him. I was walking away from him, I would turn back around and he would repeat the kiss. I would do the same. It was such a warm feeling ,like he was my own child that I was sending off. Little moments like this have stirred my heart in a great way ~

I am thankful for how God has hand picked this team of 4. Different personalities, coming together united, being used in mighty ways for Him. I have never been with women who fight over serving one another !! Nooooo..let me....noooooo..I will do it !!!!  What pure joy He has given us for this mission. I love my sisters and appreciate each gift and talent they bring. Truly it is a meshing of "threads of mercy. "

Be blessed,
   debi

Day 8 and 9.....

Hooray !!!  I am back online !!  We lost our internet last evening. Soooo..I am covering Thursday and Friday together.

Thursday began cloudy but the sun decided to come out in full force by mid morning. I am enjoying the weather.
I believe I mentioned earlier that one of the neighbors had a death in the family. The mourning  continues and I am awake early hearing the sound of wailing.

We packed up coloring books, candy and cosmetics (for the teachers) to deliver to the girl`s school we had been at previous. When we had stopped earlier we did not have the presents and we promised to return. The girls were in class so we waited until lunch at 1:00. They remembered us and had fun handing out the gifts.

We wanted to go to another slum area. You can not just decide to go to one and walk around ! Especially if you are as white as us !!  Sabina has a contact in the slum Huruma so we were able to go. Kennedy (Sabina`s wonderful son) drove us and we met a sweet sister in the Lord at the large church inside the slum. It was a beautiful church !  One that the people had built ever so slowly. How slow ??  10 cents at a time was donated by many people in the slum.  As we went inside, someone was playing the keyboard. It was a huge place and I would have loved to have been in a service there !  Esther is a believer who has a group of women who she looks after. They make some of the jewelry that we sell in our ministry. Esther hopped into the car with us and Kennedy drove as far as the road would allow. The road we were on was dirt and full of huge pot holes and ruts. The slum is an entire city inside. Children everywhere.Mountains of trash. All sorts of  shops...hair salons, butcher, vegetable and fruit, etc. We parked the car and began to walk to one of the houses. We had to go through an iron type entrance and down a narrow path. The door to this space was material. The house space was 8 by 6. As we began to enter, the ladies who all are believers and love God...were crammed inside. One held an infant. Several were working with beads. I was surprised to see a small tv !  They all had to share their money in order to go and buy a tv.  The room held a wooden couch which was used to sit on and also used as a bed at night. Actually, it was decorated with pink and pretty colors. I sensed the presence of the HS as soon as we walked in ~ The momma to the baby handed her little one to me so I had the honor of holding her for awhile. Luz had taken a fancy dress and shoes that used to be her little girl`s  to share with someone.  Once she laid eyes on this baby, she knew this was where her gift was going. The mother was thrilled !  She quickly put the clothes on the baby right over her old ones. It was a beautiful sight and we all ahhhhhhhed.  We watched as we were showed how the paper magazine beads are rolled and folded for the jewelry. I loved being in that room with everyone. Guess how many of us were in that 8 by 6 space ???  17 ladies all joined in love, joy and Him ~

As we left, we handed candy out to the many children following after us. Rows and rows as far as the eye could see....metal roofs, plywood and trash. This was home for thousands. I was never afraid and felt a warm peace as we ministered in this place. My heart is heavy for the people of Huruma ~

The evening was coming close to an end when our special names were given to us by Sabina. I was looking forward to this moment. My African kikuyo name is Wanjiku...meaning cool and hardworking. I love it !!
We giggled like school girls after the announcement of each name...what fun ~

Thursday...day 9
Today begins our "holiday" for 2 days as a time of resting and refreshment. Whew ~ So much to process. It takes a big emotional toll after many days. Yes...the same wailing this morning started my day. We are leaving for the high country, a 4 hour drive in order to go to safari. Our driver, Kim arrived and we loaded our suitcases for our time away. It was a pretty drive leaving the city. We passed large pineapple fields full of fruit and some workers. Pineapples were being sold along the road as we went. I saw several mud houses with thatched roofs along with a chestnut farm. I had to laugh when I saw the sign for "Hotel Starbucks." Mango and banana trees were plentiful also. Then it happened...we crossed the Equator !  A large sign announced that we just crossed over.

We arrived at the Kirimara Springs Hotel where we will stay for 2 nights. We have a lovely view of Mt.Kenya. Tomorrow we will drive through the Mt.Kenya National Reserve to see all the animals. It will be a fun day for sure !  I will be sleeping under my mosquito net tonight..dreaming of zebras, lions, giraffes.....

Sweet dream everyone,

Day 7 ....

As the day draws to a close...I reflect on how amazing each one is and what God brings. I forgot to mention in yesterday`s blog that as we were relaxing before bed a very loud wailing sound filled the air. We ran to the window and the sound was coming from the neighbor`s house. Sabina rushed outside to speak with the guards to find out what was happening. There had been a death and this specific tribe..it is their custom to scream and wail loudly. It is a sound I won`t forget ~ I asked how long this might go on ???  Thankfully, it ended by the time I headed to bed as it could have gone much longer !

Today we drove to a nearby community to do a survey for a plot of land regarding the ministry. It is in a beautiful area. We stood there together joining hands and praying for God`s wisdom in the days ahead.

Lunch was an official African meal. We were invited to join a sister in the Lord for fellowship. She had a precious spirit and blessed us with her warmness and love. Before we ate, a server came with warm water and soap in order for us to wash at the table. He poured the water over our hands which felt so good. A large platter of meat with potatoes came out first. Our dear friend told us it was roasted meat but not what kind. She had a smile on her face and we laughed wondering if she would tell us. She did. We were eating mutton ribs. Similar to our bar-b-q ribs. They were roasted over an open fire. Cooked greens with onions was also served which was tasty. They were like collard greens in the south that we eat ~ A green mound of mashed potatoes combined with corn and additional greens was served next. Our hostess wanted us to eat more and more ..but real slowly as another platter of meat was coming. Luz is from the Philippines so she enjoyed each bite and is used to these type of meals. When the next meat arrived it was roasted goat. I am not afraid to try new things and having a husband who is a big hunter...I have eaten lots of game. Actually, both meats were okay but I must admit that I only took 2 very small pieces of each. You must be polite and eat and when our friend insisted I eat more, I went for the dish of greens instead. Amazing how full one can get quickly...wink wink......The server returned to wash our hands again. The meal was ended by a small club soda to ease our digestion is what we were told. Okay...that is easy.

Now for the drive back into the downtown area. You know what that means....lots and lots of traffic and jams. When stopped in long lines the vendors today were selling cashews, African maps, Scrabble games and of course, bananas. I saw a truck so loaded with people that if the driver had to swerve, half of the people would have been tossed out !! We think at least 100 people were packed in that vehicle.

Near our house on the corner every day ladies sit and wait on the curb. For $10.00 you can go and hire one of them to come to clean, wash, or do any other household task for you.

Tomorrow is a special day for us girls. Sabina is giving us Kikuyu tribe names. She is from this tribe and has prayed for our names with special meaning. I am excited !!

Thank you for so many prayers and words of encouragement each day. I am loving all your posts !

Good night,

Day 6....Monday

It is Monday already !  As I write it is almost 11:00 p.m. Our full day is winding down. The hours pass so quickly and before I know it the night has come.

This morning we went shopping at  a market that reminded me of the trips we have taken to Mexico for vacation. Each vendor desires for you to stop and come in to see all that they have to offer. Each will give you a "bargain."  "Almost free" is a familiar phrase I often heard.

While waiting in heavy traffic a vendor was peddling potato chips. Yes...we bought 2 bags ~ Outside of the city we saw a herd of goats and a few cows being herded by 2 men along the road.

We returned to the open air farmer`s market for more fruits and vegetables. I love this place !!!  The food is so inexpensive. A large pineapple was under $2.00. We stocked up for some future meals we are planning.I admired an apron on one of the women. I told her that I also wear an apron back in America. She looked at me and says..."You cook ?"  I reassured her I certainly do.
Roasting ears of corn on an open fire looked yummy. Julie gave a man who was missing his legs from the knees down, a few coins. He immediately went over and bought an ear of corn and was eating it as we drive off.

Back to downtown Nairobi where a very special treat was coming up....Kenyan COFFFFEEEEE !!!!
As we entered the Java House the aroma of fresh roasted coffee beans filled the air. The place reminds me of a modern American coffee house so it brought a special comfort. The place was full and it was mid afternoon. We bought a delicious late lunch. The other girls chose fish and chips while I decided on the tuna salad wrap with fruit. It was a small taste from heaven ~ The best part was to come !  Upon reading over the coffee selection I went for the Milindi machiatio (not spelled correctly but you get the point ). I didn`t want it to be too sweet so the girl brought the syrup on the side. Perfect ~  I ordered the largest size they offered which was made with 3 shots of espresso. Yes indeed !!  Wow....it was ohhhhhhhh so good ~ I savored every sip you can be sure.

Our last stop and one I was very excited about today was "The Rehema House." Rehema" is the Swahili word for mercy and is the name of the maternity home here in Kenya. It is a beautiful, safe guarded house with 12 maternity beds. They offer prenatal care ~ proper nutrition ~ counseling ~ ministry ~ skills and a safe place to stay and learn along with healing until they graduate from the program. Maureen, the director was waiting for us and came out to greet us when we pulled in. She has an amazing story ! She is 26 years old and lived life in the slums. God has raised her up in mighty ways. She is a beautiful loving spirit and the joy of God flows out from her.

Presently, there are 6 girls in the house. Recently one of the girls gave birth to a sweet baby girl named "Precious."  The mother is only 14 years old. These girls are just little girls themselves. When you see how young they come it breaks your heart. Maureen took us through the house and it was spotless. Each bedroom held 4 beds for the mothers and little beds for each baby when it arrived hooked onto the mother bed. We will post pics once we return so please be watching for these. The girls grow a large garden and I enjoyed seeing the banana trees. Maureen told us the monkeys come and steal the fruit often. There was a sewing room with 4 sewing machines in order for them to learn this skill. They also make the most lovely products from magazines that they sell. Jewelry, coasters, hearts, birds are just a few. We got to meet each girl and give them the flip flops and candy we had brought as gifts. Several of the girls were outside working rolling and folding the pages of brightly colored magazines for their work. We were deeply touched by this ministry and during dinner we shed many tears as we tried to process all that God showed and was telling us.

Here are just a few things to consider ~

Abortion is a volatile topic in Kenya.
Mothers often force their daughters into trading sex for food in the slums.
13,000 Kenyan girls are kicked out of school for being pregnant.
Annually, 21,000 women are hospitalized from having an illegal abortion in Kenya.
Every 30 minutes a woman is raped in Kenya.
More than 20,000 children are sex trafficked in Kenya.

He has shown you, O man, what is good : and what does the Lord require of you ?
   To act justly
and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8

May we all ask God what we can do around us each day to better serve and show His love and mercy.

Good night,
   debi

Day 5....Sunday ~

Happy Sunday !  It is only the middle of the day for all of you..but we are relaxing at 10 p.m. with a good ole chocolate bar that my precious little Emerson (5 year old granddaughter) gave to me as a good-bye gift.It is a cool balmy evening. Very low humidity which reminds me of living in CO...ahhhh ~ I love the weather here.
Huge fluffy clouds filled the sky today ~

We headed to Parklands Baptist church for the 11:30 service. Throngs of people filled the parking lot. The church is a large congregation, over 1,000 people gathered for just this service. The youth met outside in a large tent. Praise music filled the air as we entered and walked upstairs to the balcony area. There were no pews or chairs. Long wooden benches wrapped around the bottom and top floors. A praise band played while 4 singers sang familiar songs to me. The pastor`s word was from Ezekiel 37: 1-14...prophesy to the dry bones. Lots and lots and lots of announcements !!  The congregation sings a welcome song for all the visitors. All engaged couples are called forward that have a wedding approaching soon. Little children were called up front and  for everyone who had a birthday...they sang. They were prayed for and dismissed to SS.
Fans above us blew warm air. Guess what time church was over ???  It was to end at 1:30 but it was 2:30 when we walked out. I hope you are not one who complains if your service goes a few minutes past ONE hour . There was enough time to doze off and have a small snack....ha ~

By the time we got to the car..yes...we were hungry !  Headed to a shopping plaza that was very modern. We ordered "Chicago style" pizza for lunch.

St.Monica`s Orphanage for girls was our next stop. The girls are between the ages of 8-18. They came out to meet us as we pulled down the long driveway. Many already knew Sabina and were so excited to see her again. We took the girls some gifts. Flip-flops, coloring books, lolli pops, soda and corn flour. For $22.00 we were able to purchase 12 - 5 pound bags of corn flour ~ 10 gallons of water ~ 15 sodas !  Please know that no matter what size of gift you donate to the ministry..large or small....as you can see the money goes a long ways. Thank you again for giving as it brought joy to these children and for us to give to them.

For $200.00 we fed 50 households in the Sinai slums which equals as many as 250 + people. These people are so poor that they usually live off 1 meal per day.

Back to the house where the girls stay. It was very clean, spacious with lots of windows. Bunk beds filled the rooms with mosquito nets. Each bed held a small plastic colored basket with her own little belongings that were special to her. They had an outside kitchen area along with a clean kitchen inside where they learn to cook. A garden was outside along with the incinerator for burning all the trash. Laundry is done in big concrete tubs outside. We had to laugh as along the driveway we spotted a pointsetta growing with big red flowers....isn`t that something ????

Tonight over chocolate and hot tea we decided to watch a movie, "Swiss Family Robinson." However, our laughs and stories were shared for so long that we missed it for the second attempt...tuning in just in time to see "the end."

Bed time has come for us now....so sweet dreams everyone.....chat tomorrow again ~

Day 4.....

Here we are at Saturday already. Today we headed off in the car to a nearby town to attend a ladies ministry meeting. Heavy traffic at all times...I will not be complaining about I-65 back-up`s any more !!!! The meeting was held in the "Home Depo Supermarket. "  Yep...not like our Home Depot ~ The owner told us she took the name from her trip to America. The ministry was held on the second story. It is called "Single Ladies International Ministries."  They take women and teach them trades in order to support themselves and make a better life. We were to begin at 2:00 but didn`t start until Kenyan time rolled in....which was after 3:00. Joy was shown all over the faces in this room. We shared singing and our team member Luz, sang such an anointed song for us all. One of the local women spoke the message on the relationships we have one with another as women,
Women are women...all common ...doesn`t matter where we live ~

After the service we headed back into a room where we were served chai tea and slices of bread with butter. We sat around the table exchanging stories and laughs. A full rich time of fellowship with our dear sisters.

Tomorrow is church and we are looking forward to a special time of worship at Sabina`s church. May you be blessed ...please keep the prayers coming. God is working in BIG ways ~

Love,

Day 3 ....

The day began full of excitement knowing we were traveling to the Sinai slum area. We prepared by praying and putting on some good closed toe shoes. On the drive we had to go through a large industrial area. I saw many petrol fuel trucks and below are a few things I noticed ~

A man with a wooden cart loaded with tall sugar cane, cutting it into pieces to eat.
On the back of one of these petrol trucks, a little boy (about 10 years old) was hitching a ride.
Pineapple being sold out of wooden wheel barrel.
A huge Coke banner on a high rise building.

Pastor Peter met us in the industrial area before heading into the slum. As we entered, the smells that began to fill the air was distinct. People walking everywhere. We had to park the car in a secure area then began the walk. We had to have "guards" with us along with Pastor Peter to ensure our safety while there. Our security were 2 wonderful young men who were very protective of us. I never felt afraid ~

Walking along rough dirt pathways...lined for miles and miles with metal shacks. Chickens roaming ~ sweet little faces coming up alongside us. A complete city within itself ~ Food shacks with meat hanging full of flies..even a hair salon. It began to rain and the dirt quickly turned to slippery mud. Our walk followed a narrow pathway to the church where Pastor Peter ministered. As we entered the doorway, the most precious faces greeted us. Mothers with little babies, children, young pretty girls and men all sitting on long wooden benches. What joy we witnessed from many of those faces. To receive a smile back was very rewarding.
We had to begin the meeting and we all joined in singing a song. My Swahili is very limited....1 word...Jambo  (hello)..but I could clap my hands and hold back the tears that wanted to freely flow. My heart felt twisted and churned over and over. However, as the service continued a gentle peace came all over me. It felt good.
We had to introduce ourselves and say a few words while Pastor translated. We had brought cooking oil, corn flour and rice to hand out to families. Pastor did a roll call and when their name was called, each would come forward for his portion. A plastic bag was held by the most beautiful hands to receive what we had brought for 50 families. Children were given candy treats and LOVED it !!  A little boy was even brave enough to venture over to me and sit on my lap. We also had little dolls that brought so much joy ~

We continued on to the fire site where the gas explosion happened recently. Perhaps you saw the news coverage on CNN. It was very quiet when we approached. People are afraid to return to the site due to the trauma. It seemed very  surreal to be standing on this ground. 100 people still missing ~ 117 people killed .
I forgot to mention...2 fire victims were at the church. One lady burned on her leg. Another mother with a baby who was safe but she was badly burned on her face. Several pigs roamed through the debris while smoke still smoldered in a few places. As we walked down to the water, Julie found a piece of a family photo that will be cherished. Houses that were only 8 by 6 were reduced to nothing but a concrete slab. There is nothing left in this area. Our guards were telling us where they were on that horrific morning and what they experienced. Since it had rained earlier, we suddenly looked up and saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky !!  God`s promise to not fear and that He brings great hope ~ Please pray for these survivors who need love and God`s provision.

Driving back to our house in heavy traffic...there was a silence at times. It had been a day filled with heartache, joy and compassion all mixed together in one pile. Thank you Father for this time to serve and show your love ~ We will forever be changed.

With Him,
   debi

Day 2 .....

Our morning began with our happy 3rd team member coming into our bedroom to announce her arrival from Uganda !  We were excited to see her and hear how God`s hand protected on the long 13 hour bus ride in order to reach Nairobi. Stories were exchanged over a breakfast of fried eggs, toast and Kenyan tea.

We traveled through the city in crazy traffic. It is like a hundred million ants all bustling to and fro with people walking and crossing the streets while vendors stand in the middle of traffic selling wares. I won`t be a back seat driver any more with my husband ! Promise ~

What an incredible day!!!! We bumped into Sabina's uncle & as we were talking he shared that he owns & runs a school for girls on the outskirts of Nairobi. We then shared our vision for a girls home...and before we knew it he was offering to give us a plot, took us to visit said plot--and girls school--and pledged to do whatever he can to help our vision become a reality! GLORY!!! God is AMAZING! Please pray and praise the Lord with us! ♥ More details to come!!

One of the highlights of my day was stopping in to see a girl`s school. Being a teacher I was full of emotions.
The guard opened the gate to let us enter. All these little precious faces greeted us !  They were all dressed in plaid jumpers with white long sleeved blouses. A cute bow tie around the collar. Keep in mind the temp was in the 80`s and they were wearing pull-over sweaters on top !! A few small ones even had winter type hats on. They looked and looked at us for several minutes but quickly warmed up and were holding our hands before long. I noticed someone touching the back of my hair. I turned around and they were giggling and fascinated with my long soft hair. I put my head down and allowed them to stroke my hair and they loved it !
We had brought candy as a special treat for them. We toured their classrooms which were bare compared to what I have ever had in my rooms while teaching. They found their seats and all began to sing a sweet song of our Mighty God. It was so precious and I will never forget that moment ~ Thank you God for giving me that small blessing today because you know my tender heart ~

Our final stop of the day was at an open air farmers market. Pulling in on a dirt road full of holes. There was a huge garbage area full of rotting vegetables and fruits that had been tossed away. People were scouring through to find anything they could to eat !  We entered the market to see the most delicious looking produce ever. What a sight ~ Burlap bags kept the sun out on all sides of the vendors stands. The prices were very inexpensive. 5 huge avocados were 1.00..along with a bag of big carrots....50 cents. The sellers were just lingering all around waiting for customers. Some were even laying down.

What an exhausting day but so fulfilling. God is faithful and already has shown His mercy and loving kindness to us. We enjoyed a tasty dinner of a new version of egg rolls made by our dear Luz. Many laughs and tears were shared together tonight. Looking forward to our day tomorrow as we prepare to go to the slums. Please keep us in your prayers.

Hugs,

We have arrived !!!!

Yes...our feet have landed in Kenya !  After a long journey from Nashville -Detroit on to Amsterdam then another 7 hours to Nairobi. Arriving in Kenya around 8 p.m. we were 2 tired girls ~ On the last leg of the flight I became ill. Not my picture perfect way to enter the country. As we began to pray I felt the mighty hand of God working so please continue to uphold us each day. The airport reminded me much of PV in Mexico. We headed for our visa which included paperwork and a long line. By the time we headed for our baggage I was beginning to feel better. PTL ~ We had our own personal bags along with ministry suitcases so our load was large. It all arrived with us ..praising God for another answer to our prayers. Our sweet Sabina and son met us with excited happy faces ! Forgot to mention...we saw the most amazing sunset and sunrise all in one day on the plane !

The night was cool which felt refreshing. We rode back to Sabina`s house through busy traffic, high rises and the night lights glowing. Driving on the opposite side in the front seat was fun for me. Kennedy (son) is a great driver and once more the driving reminded me of Mexico. I was thankful for the blessing to be here and and to soon to be ministering.

Sabina had a light meal of red beans, rice and chicken for us prepared. Going to bed was not difficult with sleep coming quickly...ahhhh...a bed !  Sleep was interrupted by another bout of being ill for several hours. Morning came....Kenyan tea to help me feel better ~ A great day resting and drinking my coke with some warm sun and cool air.

Bet you did not know Pringles are called "Kracks" in Kenya...gotta love it ~~

There is a huge palm tree in the front yard along with an avocado tree next door with plenty of them hanging heavily from the branches. Guess what we had for lunch ??  It was yummy ~

Thank you for your love, comments and prayers  support right now. It brings comfort to know you are behind us when so far from home.

Love to you all ....debi

Today is the day !!

Morning has arrived after a good restful sleep. Thanking God as the flights ahead will be long. I feel the peace of God and the many prayers of family and friends who already have begun to pray. My precious family gathered last evening for laughs and fellowship along with a time of sweet prayer together. To hear each member offer a special word has been inscribed upon my heart. I am blessed ~ I will miss them dearly. My little Emmie (5 year old granddaughter) melted my heart when she burst into tears several times and asked me not to go. I explained how I would be seeing little children just like her and take their pictures so she could see them too. She asked me.."what will you say to them ? "  I replied..." I will ask them what their name is and that they are loved just like you. "  Of course...being 5 years old..that was enough. The moment was sealed with a promise of a baggie filled with special "MiMi" mints left in my kitchen for her while gone and a big hug and kiss.

I am excited to finish up the final details and head to the airport soon. Please remember Julie and I in prayer today as we travel, make connections and begin the lengthy legs of the trip overnight and into Tuesday. Keep checking back for our arrival and updates. Thank you for coming along.....love to you all ~

Off we goooooooooooo

If they could talk....

Last evening several members of the team met for food, fellowship and to pack one of the ministry bags. We have been blessed to take along donated eye glasses. As we sorted through over 200 pairs..the thought of.."if these glasses could only tell their story ".......We would have all ages and personalities each with a fascinating journey. As we carefully examined them, some brought smiles and laughs as we could imagine the bright and lively personality who wore them in days past. Along with the flip flops and items for the children, the bag was closed and waited for the big weigh-in. Hooray !!  We made it !!  Ready to go in 3 short days on a long journey that will begin new stories all over once again.....

Changed forever,

In one week.....

Wow...it is hard to believe that next Monday night at this time we will be on one very long flight to Kenya !
We have some exciting news to share...our fellow team member, Luz Carlton, has felt led by God to join us at the last minute. Lots of racing around for her in order to complete the readiness but her steps have been ordered ....so full steam ahead !

Julie received sad news this morning out of Nairobi from our precious sister, Sabina, this morning. There was a huge fire in one of the largest slums killing 200 people. Sabina personally knew many of these people and is very sad. Please remember the survivors in prayer.

~ Donations have been steady in arriving and we continue to be blessed by the generous giving of so many.
Thank you for obeying the gentle nudges of the HS and being used as an essential part of this ministry.

As our days draw closer we covet your prayers before, during and after our trip.
                                               Kenya Team
Julie Peyton ~ Luz Carlton ~ Debi Forbes ~ Sabina Wanjiru (on the ground in Kenya)

~ Pray as we prepare this final week we will experience His peace and the enemy`s plans will be thwarted.
His ugly head tries to rise up but he is defeated in the name of Jesus !

~ Pray for our travel : flight times and connections, luggage to arrive with us, protection, good health, and all those we come into contact with. Love divine appointments !

~ Time zone adjustments : once in Kenya we will be 8 hours ahead of CST
~ Good health : no injuries, food sickness.
~ Pray for our families : peace, comfort and safety on them all.

~ Pray that as we lead and teach the women that out of our mouths will come the overflow of the HS and
love of Christ from our hearts.

~ Pray we will be sensitive to the HS and his leading each day to accomplish what He desires. Not our will...but Your`s Oh God ~

~ Pray our hearts will forever be changed !

Isaiah 54 reminds us to enlarge the place of our tent, to stretch, lengthen and strengthen. If we do not stretch and do things we have never done before, things that are beyond our ability, then we will never be able to advance the Cause of the Kingdom, have greater influence, or take more territory from the enemy.

He is with us,

10 days and counting !

I can hardly believe that we are only 10 days away from beginning our journey to Kenya !  Dreams ~ prayers ~ planning ~ preparation...all coming together for His glory ~
My suitcase is officially opened although not much is tucked inside yet. Organization madness has erupted with the amount of compiling lists growing !  Although on my trek to Target today, the lists did no good !!  Total confusion like I had never been in the store and what did I need again ???  Oh well...tomorrow is a new day and the path to Target will be well worn no doubt.

A huge thank you to everyone who is answering our call for funds to purchase flip flops and food for the precious people in Kenya once we are on the ground there. If you have a heart for missions, it is not too late to get involved. You can go to Fit for the King Ministries link and donate yet before we leave. Also, still praying for a donor for a new or used ipad to be used in the U.S and abroad in the field. Tax deductible ~ We pray you are abundantly blessed !  We know God is our provider and we are very excited to see all the ways that He pulls through.

In a few days I will be posting specific prayer requests for us regarding the trip. We covet your prayers before and during the course of our journey. It means so much to have you join with us !

Feel free to share this blog with your family and friends. We are excited to keep everyone posted on all that we are doing !!

In His love,
